Q. What do we get by joining Cub Scouts?

A. Scouting includes a full year of adventures. Many activities are recognized with awards (belt loops, patches or pins) to help scouts see how much they have accomplished. We have fun events like the pinewood derby, rocket launches and camping trips. But real value of scouting comes from the memories, friendships and character your child will gain by being a scout.

Q. How much does scouting cost?

Membership costs $130 for youth and $110 for adults (plus card fees) for one full year. There are fundraisers and scholarships to help cover the cost.

Pack 169 does not currently charge dues, but encourages all families to participate in fundraisers to cover the cost of awards and activities.

Other costs not included in membership fees:

• Scout Handbook ($25 per year)
• Uniform shirt and patches ($35 and up; worn multiple years)
• Backpack and six essentials
• Summer camps and field trips
• Activity shirts/t-shirts
• Optional activities

Q. What is the time committment?

A. You can participate as little or as much as you like. We have a one-hour meeting or a two-hour activity almost every week. It takes about two hours per month for your scout to earn their rank patches. Additional time may be needed for training and other activities.

Q. What if we can’t participate part of the year because of sports? Or every other week because of shared custody?

A. That’s okay! There is no minimum number of meetings. Work with your Den Leader (volunteer leading an age group) to make sure your scout is able to complete their rank requirements.

Q. What is Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT)?

A. Safeguading Youth Training is designed to help recognize and prevent child abuse. All all leaders, registered adults and adults attending three or more events are required to take Safeguarding Youth Training and complete a booster training every year.

Q. What trainings are required for leaders? What trainings are open to parents?

A. Every adult to attends regularly is asked to take Safeguarding Youth Training. Leaders must consent to a background check when registering. Leaders are required to take the training course for their position and complete an additional training each year.

Many training courses are available for free at my.scouting.org and open to everyone. Additional trainings are offered in person throughout the year. All our leaders and parents are encouraged to complete trainings that interest them, whether dutch oven cooking, camping skills, Leave No Trace or rangemaster.

Q. Are parents or guardians required to participate?

A. Parents and guardians are an important part of Cub Scouts! This is a wonderful opportunity to share Scouting with your child and encourage you to particpate with your child. Our leaders are all volunteers and we expect a responsible adult to stay with your child at events.

Our volunteers are a big part of what makes Scouting successful, so we would love to invite you to help with an event or teach a skill that interests you. There is no minimum time commitment.
